最上級　Level 1

A ＋ Ｖ ＋ the ＋ 最上級 ＋ in ／ of ～ で「A は～の中で最も…」を表します。3つ以上のものの中で一番であることを表す形です。

This is the most beautiful picture of all.
これはすべての中で最も美しい絵だ。

最上級の前には，ふつう the をつけます。「最も〜なもの」は1つに特定されるからです。副詞の最上級では the が省略されることもあります（He runs (the) fastest in his class.）。

in の後ろには場所や集団を表す単数名詞（in Japan，in the class）を，of の後ろには同類の複数のもの（of the three，of all）を置きます。

He is the youngest of the three brothers.
彼は3人兄弟の中で一番年下だ。

of の後ろには，比べている仲間そのもの（複数）がきます。the three brothers は比べられている3人自身です。一方，in の後ろは比べる範囲を表す場所や集団です。

one of the ＋ 最上級 ＋ 複数名詞 は「最も～なものの1つ」という意味です。

She is one of the most famous singers in the world.
彼女は世界で最も有名な歌手の1人だ。

one of the ～ の後ろは複数名詞です。また，主語が One of the oldest cities のときは，主語の中心は One なので動詞は単数で受けます（One of the oldest cities is ～）。

最上級を強めるときは，by far ／ much ＋ the ＋ 最上級「断然，ずば抜けて」や，the very ＋ 最上級「まさに最も～」を使います。

This is the very best way to learn English.
これはまさに英語を学ぶ最良の方法だ。

by far ／ much は the の前に，very は the と最上級の間に置きます。× the by far best ／ × very the best とはしません。

the ＋ 最上級 ＋ 名詞 ＋ (that) Ｓ ＋ have ever done は「今まで～した中で最も…」という意味です。

He is the kindest person I have ever met.
彼は私が今までに会った中で最も親切な人だ。

最上級のついた先行詞の後ろでは，関係代名詞 that がよく使われ，目的格なら省略されます。関係詞については「関係詞 Level 2」で確認しましょう。
