差分スロット　Level 2

差分スロット Level 1では，比較級の直前に入る「差の大きさ」を表す語句を整理しました。このページでは，差分スロットに no ／ not ／ the が入る形を扱います。no more than ／ no less than，not more than ／ not less than，A is no more B than C is D（クジラ構文），そして all the ＋ 比較級 ／ none the ＋ 比較級は，差分スロットの考え方で整理すると理解しやすくなります。

差分スロットに no が入ると「差がゼロ」となり，比較級と反対の気持ちが強調されます。no more than ～ は only「～しか」，no less than ～ は as many ／ much as「～も」と同じ意味です。

He has no less than ten cars.（＝ as many as ten cars）
彼は車を10台も持っている。

no は「差がまったくない」ことを表します。no more than は「多い」の差がゼロ → 少なさを強調し，no less than は「少ない」の差がゼロ → 多さを強調します。

not more than ～ は at most「多くても～」，not less than ～ は at least「少なくとも～」と同じ意味です。話し手の気持ちを含まない，客観的な上限・下限を表します。

You need not less than ten thousand yen.（＝ at least ten thousand yen）
少なくとも1万円は必要だ。

no は「差がゼロ」で話し手の気持ち（多い・少ない）を含みます。not は「〜より多くはない」と事実を述べるだけで，上限・下限を表します。

A is no more B than C is D は「A が B でないのは C が D でないのと同じ」，A is no less B than C is D は「A が B なのは C が D なのと同じ」という意味です。

He is no more a genius than I am.
彼が天才でないのは私が天才でないのと同じだ。

She is no less beautiful than her sister.
彼女は姉に劣らず美しい。

than の後ろには，明らかに当てはまらない例（馬は魚ではない）が置かれます。その例と「差がゼロ」だと言うことで，「A も B ではない」という否定を強く主張しています。

構文の考え方

A whale is no more a fish than a horse is. は，「クジラが魚である度合い」と「馬が魚である度合い」の差がゼロ，という意味です。馬が魚である度合いはゼロなので，クジラが魚である度合いもゼロになります。

no less ～ than は逆に，than の後ろに明らかに当てはまる例を置いて，「A も B だ」と強く肯定します。

Health is no less important than wealth.
健康は富に劣らず大切だ。

all the ＋ 比較級 ＋ for ／ because ～ は「～なのでそれだけいっそう…」，none the ＋ 比較級 ＋ for ／ because ～ は「～だからといって少しも…ない」という意味です。この the は「その分だけ」を表す副詞です。

He is none the happier for his wealth.
財産があるからといって，彼は少しも幸せではない。

for ～ ／ because ～ が「差」の理由を示しています。the は「その理由の分だけ」という意味です。「比較級 Level 2」で見た the 比較級, the 比較級 の the も，同じ「その分だけ」の the です。

none the less

none the less（＝ nevertheless）は「それでもやはり」という意味の副詞として使われます。

He has some faults, but I love him none the less.
彼にはいくつか欠点があるが，それでも私は彼が好きだ。
