読解で the former ／ the latter が出てきたら，直前に並んだ2つのもののどちらを指すかを必ず確認しましょう。和訳では「前者」「後者」ではなく，具体的な語に訳したほうがわかりやすいこともあります。
later との区別
時間：late – later – latest（より遅い／最新の）
順序：late – latter – last（後者の／最後の）
