科学系の説明文によく出てきます。test ／ support ／ propose a hypothesis「仮説を検証する／裏づける／提唱する」の形でよく使われます。形容詞 hypothetical は「仮定の」です。

-sis で終わる名詞の複数形は -ses [siːz] です（analysis → analyses，basis → bases，crisis → crises，thesis → theses）。同じく不規則な複数形をもつ語に phenomenon → phenomena，criterion → criteria があります。
