比較級　Level 1

比較級は，比較級 ＋ than の形で「…より〜」を表す比較です。このページでは，比較級 ＋ than の基本形，than の後ろの省略，less ～ than，そして比較級 and 比較級を整理します。比較の全体像と比較変化は「比較 Level 1」で確認しましょう。

A ＋ Ｖ ＋ 比較級 ＋ than ＋ B で「A は B より～」を表します。than は「…と比べて」という意味の接続詞（または前置詞）です。

This book is more interesting than that one.
この本はあの本よりおもしろい。

She gets up earlier than her mother.
彼女は母親より早く起きる。

比較級を作るときは，もとの文に戻して形容詞か副詞かを確認しましょう。She gets up early. の early は副詞なので，比較級 earlier も副詞として働きます。

than の後ろでは，前と同じ語句がよく省略されます。比べているものが何かを，省略を補って確認しましょう。

It is colder today than (it was) yesterday.
今日は昨日より寒い。

I love you more than (I love) him.
私は彼よりあなたのほうを愛している。

than の後ろは，前の文と形をそろえて考えます。It is colder today than yesterday. で比べているのは「今日」と「昨日」です。than の後ろの格（than I ／ than me）については「比較 Level 1」でも扱いました。

less ＋ 原級 ＋ than は「…ほど～ではない」という意味で，not as ～ as とほぼ同じ意味です。

I go out less often than I used to.
私は以前ほど外出しなくなった。

less の後ろには，比較級ではなく原級を置きます。× less more interesting とはしません。日常的な英語では not as ～ as のほうがよく使われます。

The story became more and more interesting.
話はますますおもしろくなった。

More and more people are using smartphones.
ますます多くの人がスマートフォンを使っている。

more interesting を重ねるときは，× more interesting and more interesting ではなく，more and more interesting とします。

比較級を強める語

「ずっと〜」と比較級を強めるときは，much ／ far ／ even ／ still ／ a lot などを比較級の前に置きます。very は比較級を強められません。

He is much taller than I am.（× very taller）
彼は私よりずっと背が高い。
