a ／ an は「1つの」以外に，「〜につき」「ある〜」「〜というもの」などの意味を表す

a ／ an は「1つの」以外に，「～につき」（once a week），「ある～」（a Mr. Smith），「～というもの」などの意味を表します。

a ＋ 人名 は「〜という人」のほかに，「〜のような人」「〜の作品」の意味になることもあります。

the ＋ 形容詞は「～な人々」，the ＋ 単数名詞は「（その）種類全体」を表します。また，by the ＋ 単位で「～単位で」，動詞 ＋ 人 ＋ 前置詞 ＋ the ＋ 体の部分 で「人の（体の部分）を～する」を表します。
We are paid by the hour.
私たちは時給で支払われている。
「彼は私の腕をつかんだ」は，He caught my arm. とも言えますが，He caught me by the arm. の形では「つかまれた人（me）」に焦点があります。体の部分には所有格ではなく the を使う点に注意しましょう。

such ／ quite ／ what は a の前に置いて such a ＋（形容詞）＋ 名詞 の語順にします。so ／ too ／ as ／ how は so ＋ 形容詞 ＋ a ＋ 名詞 の語順です。all ／ both ／ half ／ double は the の前に置きます。
I waited for half an hour.（a half hour とも言う）

限定詞を重ねられない場合
a ／ this ／ some などと所有格は並べられない → 限定詞 ＋ 名詞 ＋ of ＋ 所有代名詞
He is a friend of mine.（× a my friend）
彼は私の友人の一人だ。

a，this，some などの限定詞と所有格は，名詞の前に並べられません。その場合は，限定詞 ＋ 名詞 ＋ of ＋ 所有代名詞 の形にします（a friend of mine）。
I like this car of yours.（× this your car）
私はあなたのこの車が気に入っている。
二重所有格
a friend of mine のように，of の後ろに所有代名詞や所有格（Tom's）を置く形を二重所有格と言います。「名詞 Level 2」で見た所有格の用法とあわせて確認しましょう。
a friend of mine は「（何人かいる）私の友人の一人」，my friend は話の中で特定の友人を指すときに使う，というニュアンスの違いもあります。
