否定語を使わない否定表現
not ／ no がなくても否定の意味を表す表現がある
英文和訳では，否定の意味を読み落とさないことが大切

not や no がなくても否定の意味を表す表現があります（have yet to do「まだ～していない」，beyond description「言葉では言い表せない」，anything but ～「決して～ではない」など）。英文和訳では，否定の意味を読み落とさないことが大切です。
The problem has yet to be solved.
その問題はまだ解決されていない。
The beauty of the scene was beyond description.
その景色の美しさは言葉では言い表せなかった。
anything but ～（決して〜ではない）と nothing but ～（〜にすぎない，〜だけ）は形が似ていますが，意味は大きく異なります。but は「〜以外」という意味の前置詞で，anything but A は「A 以外なら何でも」→「決して A ではない」となります。
前置詞・形容詞による否定
beyond（〜を超えて），above（〜より上で），free from ／ free of（〜がない），short of（〜が不足して）なども，文脈によって否定の意味になります。
The question is beyond me.
その問題は私には理解できない。
We are short of money.
私たちはお金が足りない。
英文和訳では，これらを「〜できない」「〜がない」と否定に直して訳すと自然になることが多くあります。
否定語を含むのに否定にならない表現
否定語を含んでいても，全体としては肯定の意味になる表現がある
nothing but ／ cannot ～ too ... ／ not a little ／ no less than など

否定語を含んでいても，全体としては肯定の意味になる表現があります。nothing but ～「～にすぎない」，cannot ～ too …「いくら～してもしすぎることはない」，not a little「少なからず」，no less than ～「～も（多くの）」などです。
I was not a little surprised at the news.
私はその知らせに少なからず驚いた。
否定語を見ても，すぐに「〜ない」と訳さないようにしましょう。cannot ～ too と cannot help doing は「助動詞 Level 2」，no less than は「差分スロット Level 2」で詳しく扱います。
否定を含む重要構文
not A but B ／ It is not that ～ but that … ／ no longer ～
否定がどこにかかっているかを見きわめる

not A but B「A ではなく B」，It is not that ～ but that …「～というわけではなく…なのだ」，no longer ～「もはや～ない」などは，否定がどこにかかっているかを見きわめて読みます。
He no longer lives here.（＝ He doesn't live here any longer.）
彼はもうここには住んでいない。
I didn't know the truth until yesterday.
昨日になって初めて私は真実を知った。
not ～ until … は「…まで〜しない」と訳すより，「…して初めて〜する」と訳すと自然です。It was not until ～ that … や No sooner ～ than … の構造は「時制 Level 3」，not A but B などの相関接続詞は「接続詞 Level 2」で確認しましょう。
否定語が文頭に出る場合
否定語や準否定語が文頭に出ると，後ろが疑問文の語順（倒置）になります。
Never have I seen such a beautiful sunset.
こんなに美しい夕日を見たことはない。
Little did I dream that I would win.
自分が勝つとは夢にも思わなかった。
